[Backdated to when Tony woke up. Since they arrived back in Somarium after his actual birthday and it was hectic getting back things in running order, Pepper hadn't actually gotten around to buying Tony a proper birthday present. Unfortunately, by the time she got around to it herself, Tony had already fallen into a sleep coma.

So when he wakes up, he'll notice (if he does notice at all), there is a nicely wrapped box containing her gift for him with a card on top that simply says 'Happy (Belated) Birthday!' in her handwriting. She's kind of hoping he'll learn to keep better track of time but she knows better.

There's more to the present but that's for later of course.]

[It took some time to get the full story out of Schmidt as to what happened, and then to calm him down about what he learned, but there was one thing for sure. Steve was not happy how Tony handled it. Telling the kid what he did-- just, no.]

[Okay, wow, this call...wasn't an easy one. For several reasons. When he went to call his friend and found Howard's name missing from the contact list, it wasn't easy for him. Howard was a dear friend, one he had already seen come and gone, one he had already had to spend some much time away from.

And that wasn't even covering what it would to Tony. He was Howard's son. While Steve wasn't completely sure on what all went on between the two, he knew things weren't bad, and....well, he couldn't imagine Tony would take Howard's disappearance well.

Still, he deserved to know. Which was why Steve made the point to give his friend a call.]

Just...wanted to let you know, Howard's gone. Checked the contact list, couldn't find his name.

[A pause followed.]

[Tony has had an alert system rigged up designed to tell him the moment certain people disappeared. So when he receives Steve's message he's already sitting in the workshop that Howard had commandeered for himself clutching the gift that Howard had intended to give him.

Maybe he cried, maybe he just sat there blankly, maybe he threw a tantrum, no one would know because he waited until he could talk to someone without any hitch to his voice to reply to Steve.]

I know.

[The timing couldn't be more perfect. He was barely keeping it together for the anniversary of his time in captivity and now with this added to it.]

I'm clearing out his stuff right now.

[Tony's seen what Howard had been working on for Steve and made up his mind to finish it for him. Steve deserved to continue to have good memories of the man even if he'd felt like he'd been robbed of that opportunity.]

[Yeah, so he'd been waiting for this chance, and since he knows Roy will have delivered the envelope by now, and that Pepper is in the hospital, sick with a worse version of that virus he made from Steve's blood. And he has Tony's number thanks to having taken it out of Steve's dreamberry back when Steve was his prisoner all those months ago.

So he calls, setting it to video so he can see if Stark manages to hide his emotions as well as he normally does, assuming Tony even answers him with video.]

[Tony finds that his hands are physically shaking when he realises who is calling. He should have known, should have been ready and now Pepper was the one who was paying the price. He's angrier than he's ever remembered being. Not the explosive rage the Hulk was famous for, but the one Bruce Banner had, a low, constant level that hinted of something more.

He doesn't pick up immediately, letting Schmidt leave his message first. It's only after he's played it once that he calls back. He keeps it on video also, if he could attend a press conference the day his parents died and keep a straight face, he could do this as well.]

[They've broken up and are living in separate floors of the tower but she still cares enough for him to let him know even though she's positive that he's seen. As far as she sees it, this is just a call to him as his employee.]

I know you've probably already seen it, but Rhodey is gone. Did you want me to collect his things and set them aside or?

[His voice is a little gruff with the hint of a slur which suggests that he hasn't slept and also been drinking in that time.]
